As I started this adventure 5 months ago I never could have imagined how INCREDIBLE it would be.
I thought "It's only 60 miles" but it was soooooo much more than that.
What is was was HARD. Really HARD. It was also gratifying, fun, emotional, fulfilling, exhausting, challenging. I could go on for days.
I ended up raising $3,409.00 to date.
Our team of seven is at $20,936.00 and the event hit $5,000,000.00.
Wow I'm just so proud to say I was part of all that.
We (Team *Breast Friends Forever* AKA (B.F.F.)) began our journey Thursday night as we piled in Tere's car and headed to the city and to our hotel. It was wall to wall full of people in pink ready to take to the streets. Not much sleep was had that night do to our ride through Pacifica (Inside Joke) and nervous stomachs. We were up at 4:15 and in a cab by 5:15 on our way to the Cow Palace Friday morning.
The opening ceremony was really amazing and after many tears and cheers we were off.
As we left the Cow Palace we headed down the streets of Daily City and around Lake Merced where we were met with cheers from Barry full of positive words and hugs. As we continued on we enjoyed our stroll through neighborhoods and a trip by the Zoo till we hit the coast were we had lunch.
The pit stops were always so fun and they all had a different theme. You could only guess that this was my favorite.
Back on the road we walked the coast, covered part of Golden Gate Park and a corner of San Francisco which took us to our last and LONGEST mile down to Crissy fields.
With 21 miles under our belt we got our bags and set up our tents. The food at camp was great and I never thought a shower in a trailer could ever feel that good. After the earthquake we were in bed and asleep by 9:00 pm. I slept soooooooooo good.
Day two was full of challenges. To start it was 22 miles long and 96 degrees. Our walk over the bridge was fantastic. We dropped down into Fort Baker then walked through Sausalito till we hit Mill Valley, made a loop and headed back. Lunch that day was at mile 12.6 and I was tore up. The heat had people in tents with IV's and at that point Dina, Tere and I made the conscious choice to get on the bus and have it take us 6 miles to Fort Baker to wait for the rest of our team that felt they could walk that hot dusty road. I felt that by getting on the bus I got to experience the whole 3 Day (Ha Ha).
At pit stop 5 our whole team was together again and headed the last 3 1/2 miles back over the bridge and down to camp. Again dinner and a shower never felt so good and slept like a baby.
Day 3 was exciting because it took us through all of the wonderful little areas of San Fran and we knew closing ceremonies were in sight. I was sad that it was the last day to be greeted by the wonderful volunteers that controlled traffic and cheered us on. These are a few of my favorites.
Day three was a blast. You would run into people you had come to know and I found a pace that really suited me (at the back of the pack). We got to walk through so many of San Franciscos greatest places and ended up at The Marina Green where 1500 of our fellow walkers cheered us on as the seven of us walked to the finish line arm and arm. That was a truly amazing moment for me. Probably my favorite and one I will NEVER forget. We received our pink rose and got our t-shirt and headed to the closing ceremony.
As we walked in I was so happy to spot Scott, Devin and my Mom. Keeping with the theme of the weekend I cried again (I did a lot of that over the 3 days).
After the first walkers walked in and then the crew, all of the survivors that walked in the 3 Day came in to the ceremony. As they did we took off a shew to them. It was really moving.
I was so happy to have been able to spot Dina in the group of survivors and tell her Love you. I'm so proud of her and us all. I was so glad to have shared this experience with my BFF's.
WE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will never forget this amazing experience and will forever hold it close to my heart.
That being said I was more than happy to come home and cuddle with my loving family.
This was my welcome home.
For those of you who know me well enough you will know that these are not all of my 100 or more pictures I took.
